Essentially Essential Oils

Recently, I heard a joke about essential oils.

I went to a friend’s house and her kitchen table was full of essential oils. Shoot! I don’t have any of them. I’m lucky to be alive!

Cleverly and humorously written, the joke does have some merit begging the question why are essential oils called essential? Essential oils are called “essential” in the idea that the oil, which is found in the plant, carries a particular or distinctive scent or taste that is only recognizable to a particular plant species.

Such oils were called essential because they were thought to represent the very essence of odour and flavour.- Encyclopedia Britannica

As the joke implies, essential oils aren’t considered essential for health but there does seems to be a lot of talk about essential oils, lately. As of recent I heard it twice on television this month. Squidward from SpongeBob Square Pants mentions his use of essential oils as he’s getting out of a relaxing bath. On the Science Channel a program was showing the distillation process for making lavender essential oil. It made me start wondering if essential oils are new only to me or have they been around for a long time?

Essential oils aren’t new, despite the recent hype. They were mankind’s first medicine and have been around for years, thousands of years in fact. For example, Egyptians used essential oils for the embalming process; evidence of well-preserved oils was found in jars in King Tut’s tomb. And, there are a number of references to essential oils in the Bible, 188 to be exact.

No matter how you put it, oils extracted from plants have been recognized as an effective medicine from the beginning of time. I love the idea of using something that’s from nature, pure in its original form, and using it on my family and myself. There are virtually no side effects and the essential oils seem to be very effective and useful in so many ways.
